Quilt Alliance Announces:

Inspired By

Sponsored by these generous Quilt Alliance business members:

       City Quitler

Entry Deadline: June 1, 2014

Our 2014 contest theme is Inspired By
Our mission is to document, preserve and share the stories of (all) quilts and (all) quiltmakers. We encourage everyone who makes quilts to enter our annual contest regardless of their style (traditional, modern, art) or technique (longarm, hand quilting, applique, pieced...) --all are welcomed and valued!

This year's guidelines were:
Pick a quilt. Find your inspiration. Make your own.

1. Pick an inspiration quilt. Choose a quilt from The Quilt Index or the Quilters' S.O.S.- Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) projects, (see the Inspiration Gallery below for a few quilts selected by our members as examples of the variety and richness found in these resources). Browse and explore the projects to find your own inspiration quilt.
2. Find something(s) about the inspiration quilt that inspires you (like color, line, texture, subject matter, ...)
3. Make your own quilt--work your magic--all techniques, materials, and styles are welcomed, but no replicas or copies allowed. All entries must be 16" x 16" and comprised of 3 layers (top, filling and back).
4. Sew a sleeve and a label on your entry and mail it to us with your entry form and fee by June 1, 2014.

Professional judges will select the Handi Quilter Grand Prize and the winner will receive a HQ Sweet Sixteen sit-down longarm machine package (machine, table and bobbin winder) by Handi Quilter, Inc.  Prize includes training by a local Handi Quilter retailer.

First, Second and Third place and Honorable Mention awards will be voted on by Alliance members and prizes will be supplied by these generous Quilt Alliance Business Members Moda Fabrics, eQuilter.com, The Electric Quilt Company, EZ Quilting, Simplicity Creative Group, AURIfil. Our venue sponsos are Original Sewing & Quilt Expo and The City Quilter, and our documentation sponsor is stkr.it.

All entries will be documented in The Quilt Index and travel to quilt shows, museums and other exhibition venues in the summer and fall of 2014. All quilts are a donation to the Quilt Alliance and will be auctioned to benefit the work of this 20-year-old nonprofit organization to document, preserve and share the history of quilts and quiltmakers.

Entry postmark deadline is June 1, 2014.

Need some examples? Here's Quilt Alliance board member Mark Lipinski to get you started.

Get inspired by quilts shared through Q.S.O.S. or The Quilt Index.

This year we are using our contest to spread the word about the incredible resources the Quilt Alliance and its partners offer you. Inspiration is always right around the corner for your next quilt, whether it's found in a quilt shared through the Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) oral history collection (including more than 1,000 interviews with quiltmakers), or spotted in The Quilt Index, an online collection of more than 54,000 quilts. The Quilt Index, a partner project of the Quilt Alliance, Michigan State University Museum and MATRIX at MSU, contains records and images of historical and contemporary quilts contributed by museums, documentation projects, historical societies, guilds and private collectors from the U.S. and around the world.
Browse or Search Q.S.O.S.
Browse or Search The Quilt Index.

Watch a video on how to Cruise & Use The Quilt Index.

The entry form for our Inspired By contest will ask you to list the source of your inspiration by giving the title, maker and date of the quilt and which project you selected it from (The Quilt Index or Q.S.O.S.).

INSPIRATION GALLERY (view in Pinterest or on our blog)

Important note on copyrights.
All quilt images from The Quilt Index, the Q.S.O.S. project and other Quilt Alliance archives, are fully covered under copyright laws. Copyrights remain with the maker or owner of each quilt, as documented, and the images are only to be used for educational purposes within the context of The Quilt Index or Q.S.O.S. At the same time, the Alliance hopes that these quilts can and will be used to inspire today's quilters, and we've chosen some for our Inspiration Gallery to demonstrate the vast range of styles and techniques you can find in these resources. We ask that you use these and other quilts in the project archives only as a starting point or outline for your creation. Pay homage to your inspiration quilt, exploit it, or explore it through your entry without replicating, reproducing or copying it, even in part.

New opportunity this year: StoryPatches Slideshows:
Documenting your quilt from Inspiration to Creation!

In progress photos of "Alliances: Soil and Sky," Allie Aller's entry for the 2011 Quilt Alliance contest, excerpted from her blog, Allie's in Stitches.

The stkr.it company, a valued Alliance business member, has donated their services so that all of our contestants will have the option to document their entry from start to finish. If you’d like to participate, take plenty of photos of your entry in progress, and send an email to admin@quiltalliance.org to receive instructions on how to upload your in-progress photos. Once your entry is complete, viewers will be able to view these photos as a slideshow including an image of your inspiration quilt. If you create a slideshow, we will apply a stkr.it StoryPatches label to the back of your quilt before it is auctioned. This will allow the winning bidder to use a QR code reader on a smart phone to view the StoryPatches Slideshow, so they can share in the whole story of your quilt--from inspiration to creation!

Looking forward to being inspired by YOU and your Inspired By entry!
