Theme

Our 2012 theme is “Home Is Where the Quilt Is,” a broad theme that celebrates the form and the meaning of Home. All techniques and materials are encouraged. Entries must be 3 layers--top, filling and backing and must conform to our contest guidelines--click here to download the "Home" entry form (3 pages).

Prizes and Sponsors

Venue sponsors include Original Sewing & Quilt Expo and Maine Quilts. Recording services for our audio artist's statements provided by VoiceQuilt.

Grand Prize: The Grand Prize winner (to be chosen by a panel of three professional quilters/designers) will choose from any of Handi Quilter machine quilting systems: an HQ Sweet SixteenTM sit-down machine; the HQ18 Avanté, an 18” longarm; or the HQ24 Fusion, a 24” longarm. Everything you need to get started is included: machine, table/frame, bobbin winder and “Getting Started” DVD and training with your local HQ Rep.

First Prize: AAQ Members will vote to award First Prize, a gift pack of products donated by our AAQ Business Members.

Second Prize: AAQ Members will vote to award Second Prize, a gift pack of products donated by our AAQ Business Members.

Third Prize: AAQ Members will vote to award Third Prize, a gift pack of products donated by our AAQ Business Members.

Honorable Mention Prizes: AAQ Members will vote to award Honorable Mention Awards. These winners will receive products donated by our AAQ Business Members.

Contest Format and Rules

Contest quilts become a donation to AAQ. All entries will be auctioned with 100% of the proceeds supporting the AAQ and its projects. This auction is one of our most successful annual fundraisers and a great way for quiltmakers to support our mission in a creative way.

Grand Prize will be awarded by a panel of 3 professional quilters/designers. Member’s Choice, Honorable Mention prizes and several specially awarded prizes will also be given. AAQ members will choose Member’s Choice awards--a good reason to become a member when you enter the contest and to solicit new members—every vote counts!). Previous Grand Prize winners are ineligible for consideration for Grand Prize. *Visit www.allianceforamericanquilts.org/support/ for more information about becoming an AAQ member.

Entry Fee Non-refundable. Alliance members pay $5 per quilt. Non AAQ members* pay $25 for the first quilt and $10/ea for subsequent quilts. *Please click here for more information about becoming an Alliance member for as low as $25/year. The Alliance for American Quilts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations and memberships are deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Limit of Entries: None. Enter many!

Size of entries: Overall house shape is 15"w x 19.5"h. Each entry must follow the rules on dimensions and construction on page 3 of the entry form.

Sleeve and label: Each quilt must have a 4-inch sleeve and 1/2" or 3/4" ring sewn onto the back for hanging. See instructions on page 3 of the entry form. Also, a label with the entrant's name, title of quilt and date must be securely sewn on the back of the quilt.

Artist's Statement: A 75-word (max) artist's statement must accompany each quilt (see entry form).

Again this year: audio artist’s statements. One of our AAQ business members, VoiceQuilt, has donated free audio recording services so that all of our contest entrants can record their artist’s statement. Our audience will be able to hear about your quilt not only in your own words, but in your own voice. Once you’ve submitted your quilt, we’ll contact you with instructions on how to record your artist’s statement.

Member's Choice Awards: The members of the Alliance for American Quilts will each have one vote for their favorite quilt. Their decision will be final. Run-offs will be held as needed. The organizers reserve the right to decide which quilts will be included in exhibitions if space is limited

Who May Enter: Open to anyone who wishes to enter. The entries may be the work of more than one person as long as proper credit is given to all involved in the actual completion of the quilt. If a quilt made by multiple artists wins a prize, artists are responsible for distributing/sharing prizes.

Exhibitions: The quilts will be exhibited on The Alliance's website as well as national venues including a debut exhibition at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Raleigh, N.C., June 21-23, 2012. After the national exhibition tour the quilts will be auctioned and the proceeds will go to The Alliance for American Quilts.

Copyright Permission: Entry into the competition automatically grants copyright permission for the image of the quilt and/or all or part of the Artist's Statement about the quilt to be used in articles, ads, promotions, posters, card, catalogs, books, websites, CDs, event news coverage, television productions and/or multimedia productions for and about The Alliance for American Quilts. The quilt artist retains copyright to his/her quilt design.

Must be POSTMARKED no later than June 1, 2012. The complete entry should contain the following:

  • Completed, signed Entry Form (one entry form per quilt) including Artist's Statement
  • Quilt following dimensions and construction rules on p. 3 of the entry form
  • Non-refundable entry fee. Non AAQ members* pay $25 for the first quilt entered and $10/ea for subsequent quilts. Alliance members pay $5 per quilt. There are three payment options:
  • Check or money order, in U.S. funds drawn on a U.S. bank and made payable to The Alliance for American Quilts
  • PayPal: Login to your PayPal account. Send your payment to quiltalliance@yahoo.com. When you are asked to select "Category of Purchase," choose "Service/Other." In the "Message to Recipient" field, enter "Home contest" your name and the title of your quilt.
  • Credit Card: include your credit card info on the entry form.

2012 Competition Calendar

June 1, 2012: Postmark deadline for entries.
June 21-23, 2012: Quilts debut at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Raleigh, North Carolina.
July 27-29, 2012: Quilts exhibited at the 35th Annual Maine Quilts show in Augusta, Maine.
August 22-25, 2012: Quilts exhibited at the AQS Quilt Show in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
